KRS-One
Arguably the most respected figure in hip-hop culture, Brooklyn-born KRS-One (a.k.a. Lawrence "Kris" Parker) is one of the core pioneers of the genre's growth from the projects of New York to being the worldwide genre it is today.
Having rose to prominence with the group Boogie Down Productions in the mid 1980s, and later on as a solo artist, he's continued to fly the flag for hip-hop as a medium for social and political discussion and is best known for his songs, "Sound of da Police", "Love's Gonna Get'cha (Material Love)", and "My Philosophy".
