WHAT'S ON AT THEATRE ROYAL DRURY LANE, LONDON
Theatre Royal Drury Lane is currently home to the UK premiere of Disney's Hercules. It was first built in 1663 and after several fires and demolitions, the current venue opened in 1812 and is a Grade I listed building. Following a renovation in 2013, original features can still be found in the front of house. Known worldwide as an innovative theatre, it has led the way with ambitious staging such as racing chariots, landing helicopters, creating earthquakes and train crashes, sinking and burning ships, and even staging under water fights!
With a seating capacity of around 2000, Theatre Royal Drury Lane is the world’s oldest theatre site in continuous use and also one of the world’s most haunted theatres. In a series of firsts, Drury Lane was where the British public first heard the National Anthem, first heard Rule Brittania, it installed the world’s first safety curtain, and was the first theatre to be gas lit throughout.
Theatre Royal Drury Lane has hosted the BAFTA’S, is home to Michael McIntyre’s Big Show, premiered Netflix’s The Crown, held concerts such as Sondheim’s 85th Birthday Tribute, and has boasted some of the world’s biggest musicals such as Miss Saigon, 42nd Street, and Frozen.
