Fair Weather Son
Fair Weather Son (Mark Ellis) is a North Berwick based singer, producer and BMG published songwriter who has been writing and performing for 20 years. Drawing his influences from Wilco, Weezer, Blur and many more Fair Weather Son delivers songwriting charm and a sound that is timeless. His latest releases 38 Years, Measures and Happy both all received national radio play on BBC Scotland along with multiple local radio stations and also made their way on to the Amazing Radio?s Best In Country playlist among many other playlists. Jim Gellatly of Amazing Radio describes Fair Weather Son as ?Timeless Americana and New Wave with Elvis Costello vibes.?
Releasing his self-produced EP in 2020, the lead single This Thing Is Better later received radio play on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire and Cambridge 105 and inspired award winning director Jonnie Howard to animate a video which generated over 14,000 views on YouTube.
Mark started out as drummer for Cambridge band Hamfatter, achieving small chart success in the UK and Austria. They made an infamous appearance on UK TV show Dragons Den in 2008! In the years after Hamfatter, Mark began writing his own songs. After showing early promise, he often spent time writing with his friend and also then neighbour Boo Hewerdine (The Bible, Eddi Reader). Under his own name Mark released several singles in the early 2010?s including Carry You a charity single for Clic Sargent. This release would later lead to a special performance at the Royal Albert Hall.
In 2016 Mark formed Elma, a 60?s inspired duo releasing album Dreamland to high acclaim. The ?finely crafted retro pop? (Roddy Hart BBC Scotland) record helped Mark receive a publishing deal with BMG Music. He has since had over 30 songs published. One of these was with Abigail DB. Their first single written together, Put The Fire Out, was named in BBC Introducing?s Best Of The Year 2022.
