The Cinematic Orchestra

The Cinematic Orchestra

British nu jazz and downtempo pioneers Jason Swinscoe's Cinematic Orchestra continue to blow all our expectations.

Back in 1999, the group's debut record 'Motion' set tongues wagging with its unique take on modern dance music production techniques and the sheer visual energy of its sound, described as "the most innovative urban/dance fusion since Massive Attack," while their move into a more downtempo nu-jazz realm resulted in the achingly beautiful Platinum-certified 2007 track "To Build a Home" (featuring Canadian singer Patrick Watson).

While people rightly have talked about Swinscoe and long term collaborator Dominic Smith's brand of music-making what they do in terms of jazz, the truth is that the basis of their music has always also been in raw emotion. If the mood is melancholy, The Cinematic Orchestra manage to make it an ultimately uplifting experience, perhaps in the end more about the love you find than the love you lose.

The London-based act has seen an ever-changing line-up, largely built around a core featuring some of Manchester's finest musicians, including bassist Phil France, drummer Luke Flowers, guitarist Stuart McCallum, pianist John Ellis, double bassist Sam Vicary, and Lamb vocalist Lou Rhodes, alongside Dublin saxophonist Tom Chant and London pianist Nick Ramm.
