SE SO NEON

Since their formation nearly a decade ago, SE SO NEON has become one of Korea’s most loved and respected alternative bands, receiving awards and acclaim while steadily amassing a global fanbase.

The band— now the solo project of singer, songwriter, and multidisciplinary artist Soyoon, following the 2025 departure of founder bassist Hyun-jin Park – defy any expectations placed upon them.  

SE SO NEON have become well-known for their expansive definition of "rock," with Pitchfork referring to them as "a versatile name in the Korean indie scene".

Soyoon Hwang grew up in South Korea’s mountainous North Chungcheong Province, and when she wasn’t in classes, she’d take time to appreciate the natural beauty surrounding her, recording in both New York and Los Angeles.  

SE SO NEON is a band, says Soyoon, although the 2025 exit of Park Hyunjin means that it doesn’t operate in “classical band territory anymore.” Looking at norms and tweaking them to better suit her ambitions is normal for Soyoon, who began studying music when she first took piano lessons at age five before becoming obsessed with electric guitarists like B.B. King and John Mayer.

Her own guitar playing is key to Se So Neon's sound, which defies idea of genre and form to create a wholly unpredictable, yet utterly natural landscape, much like the ones she marveled at as a child in Korea and as a young adult in Los Angeles.
