Some Like It Hot (U)
Nobody’s perfect? Billy Wilder’s classic comedy from 1959 – starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon – comes close.
Joe and Jerry are down on their luck jazz musicians who find themselves out of a job when the police raid the speakeasy they perform in. Things go from bad to worse when they inadvertently stumble upon a gang war and must go on the run after witnessing a mob hit.
With no money and nowhere to hide, a gig with Sweet Sue and Her Society Syncopators seems like the perfect getaway plan: the band needs a saxophone and a double bass, and Joe and Jerry need to get out of the Chicago cold and evade the mobster heat. There's just one problem: the Syncopators are an all-girl band, and Joe and Jerry aren't women - yet.
It’s hard to imagine any other actress of the era taking on the role of Sugar Kane: the ukulele-toting leader of the Syncopators who finds herself the object of desire for Joe and Jerry – and Josephine and Junior and Daphne and…
Marilyn Monroe, though, more than holds her own alongside the combined motor-mouthed comedic prowess of Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. The sizzling trio race through Billy Wilder and I. A. L. Diamond’s rat-a-tat script en route to creating one of the greatest Hollywood comedies of all time.
