Nightwish

Nightwish

Formed in 1996 by longstanding keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, Nightwish quickly established global appeal by blending melodic metal with epic orchestral sounds and acclaimed theatrical performance. Originally featuring singer Tarja Turunen, the band drew comparison to contemporaries such as Lacuna Coil and Therion, drawing the attention of Spinefarm Records who released their debut Angels Fall First in 1997. Nightwish celebrated significant commercial success in their native Finland with Oceanborn the following year, reaching the top five on the Finnish album chart.

Setting their sights globally, Nightwish unveiled Wishmaster in 2000, their first album to secure a stateside release. This momentum continued leading up to the release of Once in 2004. Despite the album's international success, Nightwish parted ways with Turunen a year later citing personal reasons. She was replaced by Anette Olzon for two more albums, before departing the band in the midst of their world tour.

Former After Forever vocalist Floor Jansen stepped in at the last minute, quickly becoming a permanent member of the band thanks largely to fans' reaction to her powerful voice. Nightwish's first release with Jansen at the forefront came in the form of Showtime Storytime, a live recording from their Wacken Open Air Festival performance. The first original material featuring Jansen, Endless Forms Most Beautiful, followed in 2015. Its success led Nightwish to perform across the globe for over a year, even welcoming scientist Richard Dawkins to the stage for a triumphant performance at The SSE Arena, Wembley .

Taking some time to recoup from the extensive touring schedule and from recent changes to their line-up, Nightwish returned to celebrate 20 years as a band in 2018 with a greatest hits collection and a global tour.

In 2020, Nightwish released their ninth studio album, Human :II: Nature, split into two. While the first half featured nine new tracks, the second delivered an experimental suite of conceptual music entitled All The Works Of Nature Which Adorn The World.
