The Old Vic London is an independent theatre and registered charity, making it a local theatre with a global impact. It originally opened in 1818 as the Royal Coburg Theatre. The Old Vic began life as a music hall, eventually becoming home to The Old Vic Company in 1929, led by John Gielgud, and the first National Theatre Company, led by Laurence Olivier.
With a rich history of opera, melodrama, Shakespeare, and dance, The Old Vic now showcases musicals, plays, comedy, music concerts, and premieres such as the musical Groundhog Day. With actors such as Judi Dench, Michael Gambon, and Maggie Smith making their name there, The Old Vic remains one of London’s most historical venues.
